You head to the lake for sun. You find green scum instead.
Northern Ireland’s water bodies are once again hosting a toxic unwanted guest: blue-green algae. The toxic bacteria, linked to skin irritation and sickness for humans and pets alike, is not going away anytime soon. It has become the defining summer nuisance in the region.
The scale is hard to ignore. There are currently 248 blooms recorded across Lough Neagh and other water systems in Northern Ireland. The UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology notes that 80 of these were confirmed in June and July alone.
Which Lakes Are Affected by Blue-Green Algae?
The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural affairs (Daera) has flagged specific danger zones. Camlough Lake near Newry is one. So is Craigavon Lake.
For those hoping to paddle, swim, or just sit by the water, the message is clear. Avoid contact. But the warning doesn’t just protect health. It kills business.
Economic Hits from Algae Warnings
Karl Toner runs a coffee cart on the Camlough shoreline. He also owns a glamping site and a paddleboard hire business nearby. Before July 13, he expected a summer rush. Now? Empty.
“In the summertime this place really goes off,” Toner says. “Now the algae has just completely killed it.”
Normal days meant hundreds of people from across Northern Ireland and beyond. Mornings until midnight. Swimming. Lounging. Spending.
Today, the shore is quiet.
This isn’t just about lost coffee sales. It’s a ripple effect through local tourism. When the water looks wrong, people don’t come. They go elsewhere. The seasonal revenue that supports small operators vanishes with the warning sign.
Why Open Water Swimmers Are Worried
Joanne Callan started swimming at Camlough in 2018. She’s a holistic therapist from Bessbrook. She became a regular during the pandemic lockdowns.
Today, she’s part of a community of over 100 open-water swimmers and cold-water dipper. Friendships formed in the water. Families playing in shallows. Paddleboarders testing their balance. Triathlon athletes using the lake as a training ground.
“Keeping the lake closed or restricting access… would impact many people, physically, emotionally, and socially,” Callan says.
The lake was a hive. Now it’s a no-go zone.
The social cost is real. These spots aren’t just water. They’re meeting places. They’re therapy. They’re routines. Take them away, and you fracture a community.
Where Does Blue-Green Algae Come From?
You might ask why this keeps happening. The answer is messy. It’s agricultural. It’s industrial. It’s domestic.
Warm weather usually triggers blooms. This year, the start was slow. Strong winds and heavy rain kept the surface agitated. Algae needs calm water to form those large, visible mats.
But the conditions are shifting. Calm water is coming back.
Take Lough Neagh. It’s sitting on roughly 40 years of accumulated phosphorus. Phosphorus feeds algae. It’s stored in the sediment.
Every rainstorm washes more into the lake. Farm runoff. Wastewater overflow. Unmaintained septic tanks. Industrial waste. Detergents from households across the catchment area.
The lake is constantly topped up.
How to Prevent Blue-Green Algae Blooms
Addressing the nutrient source is the only real solution. Farming and water treatment are the big contributors. But fixing them isn’t easy. It isn’t cheap.
Policies like the Nutrient Action Programme exist. They aim to reduce runoff. They try to catch what gets flushed into our rivers and lakes.
But there’s no quick fix.
We’ll see the green mats again. We’ve seen them before. The science is clear. The phosphorus is there. The weather will cooperate eventually.
The question remains whether the infrastructure can keep up with the pollution load.
Right now, the lakes are silent. The swimmers stay home. The coffee cart sits idle.
