Kara Zor-El, better known to the world as Supergirl, first showed up in Action Comics #252 back in May 1959. The setup was brutal. Krypton had just blown up. Argo City, her whole hometown, was launched into space on a chunk of dying planet. It seemed like a miracle save until the reality set in. The floating city was drifting through radiation. Kryptonite seeped in. It made everyone sick. Decent Kryptonians started withering away.
Kara’s dad, Zor-El, had to make a choice. He was the brother of Jor-El, Superman’s pop. Zor-El put his niece in a rocket. He sent her to Earth. The goal was simple. Get her to her cousin before the Argo City population died off completely.

That basic setup held up for a while. Then DC Comics got to work. They changed things around. The 2004 relaunch shifted the narrative. Now, Kara wasn’t just sent to survive. She was sent to protect Superman. The trip changed too. She didn’t just wake up in Kansas. She stayed in suspended animation for the whole journey. It added a layer of isolation to her arrival. One moment she was in a dying city. The next, she woke up on Earth.
