Andy Weir’s The Martian isn’t just old news. It’s fifteen. 🎂
And for its anniversary? He’s dropping a deluxe hardcover that actually looks the part.
Let’s rewind a bit. Remember when this book was practically free? Serialized on a personal blog, then dumped onto Amazon’s Kindle store for a dollar? Yeah. That’s the humble beginning. Until Penguin Random House took notice.
Then things exploded. 🚀
Published globally in 2014. Ridley Scott directed a movie the next year. Matt Damon survived on camera. Jessica Chastain looked concerned in control room. Oscar season loved it. Three million copies sold since then? Probably understating it at this point.
Why are we here though?
The new hardcover.
“A classic deserves to look the part.”
Released May 26, 25? No wait—26, 2026. My calendar says the future is bright and slightly delayed. Anyway, they sent us a proof. We touched the pages. The edges are sprayed with cosmic swirls. Actual glittery ink maybe.
The jacket has new reflective art. Shine on, Mark. Inside? Full-color endpapers showing that specific orange Mars hue. You know the one. Dust everywhere.
Then the bare case. No paper over it. Just a giant potato. 🥔 Floating in space. It’s perfect.
Physical media is back. We buy books like they’re artifacts now. This one fits right in. 384 pages of heavy, beautiful paper.
Story-wise? You probably know it. Dust storm hits. Mark gets “dead.” Crew leaves. Mark isn’t dead. Oh no. Mark has to grow food. He has to build radio. He has to survive.
Ingenuity meets heartbreak meets science class.
Does it still work after 15 years?
Kinda.
It’s the same book. But wrapped up nicely?
Maybe keep that copy. For the potato. For the history. The rest of it stays online forever anyway. So hold the hard copy. Let it sit on a shelf somewhere. Looking smug.
What do you think? Worth the extra cash for a fancy cover?
